The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

Recently I finished this lovely little book...
I've been wanting to read this book for sometime now and am questioning what took me so long.
It was a fantastic read for so many reasons.  It made me laugh and it made me cry.  It made me so very grateful for what I have.

You know when you read a book and you think to yourself, "Wow, that was great!"  And then, every once in a great while you read a book and think to yourself, "Wow! Thank goodness I read this!"
I definitely felt that way with this story about potato peel pies, courage and strength, good and evil, horror and love.

It is about a writers journey through the aftermath of WWII and the lives and stories that touch her heart.
I was amazed at the writing style, the humor, the wit, and the heart-wrenching stories.
I fell in love with the characters, every one of them.

Upon finishing this fantastic book, I made two discoveries:

1. The author, Mary Ann Shaffer, passed away after the original work was accepted for publication.  The editing and rewriting required was done by her niece, Annie Barrows.  This is her only published novel and it breaks my heart that she did not live to see her success.
"All I wanted was to write a book that someone would like enough to publish"
-Mary Ann Shaffer

2.  It is a movie!  Well, it's going to be...maybe I've been living under a rock, but I had no idea they were adapting this book into film.  I am beyond excited.  Kate Winslet is rumored to portray the main character, Juliet Ashton.

You definitely need to read this book before seeing the movie, you won't regret it.  In fact, you might just thank me.
Happy Reading!

  7. I've picked up this book at the bookstore and library before and flipped through it a few times, but never got it. I don't read a lot of historical fiction and wasn't sure if I'd be that good, but I guess it's worth a chance. I'll have to add it to my library list!
